Shop Drawings vs Design Drawings: What's the Difference?

Design drawings show what something should look like and where it goes; shop drawings show exactly how it will be built and installed. Design (or architect's) drawings communicate the design intent — the appearance, dimensions and layout — to the client and the planning process. Shop drawings translate that intent into fabrication-ready detail for the workshop that actually makes the item and the team that fits it on site. On most UK fit-out and joinery packages you need both: the design drawing to agree the vision, and the shop drawing to build it without error.

If you run projects — as a main contractor, a fit-out firm, a shopfitter or a joinery subcontractor — the gap between these two document types is where a surprising amount of cost and conflict hides. This guide explains what each drawing is, who produces it, and why the shop drawing stage is the one you can't skip.

What are design (or architect's) drawings?

Design drawings — also called architect's drawings or design-intent drawings — establish what a project should look like, how big it is, and how it sits within a space. Their job is to communicate the designer's intent, not to describe how the item is manufactured.

Design drawings are produced by the architect or interior designer. They typically include general layouts, plans, elevations and, increasingly, visuals or renders that let a client picture the finished scheme. Their purpose is to win client approval, satisfy planning, and set the scope of the work.

Crucially, design drawings stop short of fabrication detail — and they do so deliberately. An architect might specify a walnut reception desk three metres long. They will not usually specify the carcass construction, the joint types, the edge detail or the fixing centres. That is not an oversight: the designer owns the vision, and the party that builds it owns the build. The shop drawing is where the build gets defined.

What are shop drawings?

Shop drawings are detailed, fabrication-ready drawings that show exactly how a specific element will be manufactured and installed — every dimension, material, joint, fixing and tolerance the workshop and the site team need. They are also called workshop drawings or fabrication drawings.

Shop drawings are produced by, or on behalf of, the party that will actually build the item — the contractor, subcontractor or fabricator — rather than the architect. A complete set covers general arrangement (GA) drawings, fully dimensioned detail and section drawings, material and finish specifications, hardware and ironmongery schedules, cutting lists and panel schedules, and CNC-ready files for the machines.

The simplest way to hold the distinction in your head: a design drawing answers what; a shop drawing answers how.

What's the key difference between shop drawings and design drawings?

The key difference is purpose and author. Design drawings communicate design intent from the designer to the client and planning authority. Shop drawings communicate manufacturing and installation detail from the fabricator to the workshop and the site team. One agrees the vision; the other builds it.

A worked example makes it concrete. A design drawing tells you the reception desk is three metres long and walnut. A shop drawing tells you it is built from 18mm veneered MDF on a softwood carcass, with mitred veneer edges, a concealed cable route, a brushed-brass kick, and these exact fixing positions — everything needed to make it in the workshop and install it on site without a single phone call.

They differ on almost every axis: who produces them, who reads them, the level of detail, and where they sit in the programme. Design drawings come first and set direction. Shop drawings come second and remove ambiguity before anything is cut.

Who produces shop drawings?

Shop drawings are produced by the party responsible for fabrication — typically the main contractor, a specialist subcontractor, a shopfitter, or a joinery or casework fabricator — not the architect. On UK contracts run under JCT or NEC forms, shop drawings are issued as submittals: the contractor submits them to the design team for review and approval before anything is manufactured. Approval closes the loop — from that point, everyone is building from the same agreed set.

The practical problem is that many contractors and fit-out firms don't carry an in-house CAD team. Producing accurate shop drawings for a full joinery package is skilled, time-consuming work, and it doesn't make sense to employ a full-time draughtsman for it. Do I need shop drawings if I already have architect's drawings?

In almost all cases, yes. Architect's drawings are rarely detailed enough to manufacture from, because they were never meant to be — they establish intent, not construction. A workshop asked to build directly from design drawings has to fill the gaps with assumptions about materials, joints, tolerances and fixings. Those assumptions are exactly where errors, variations and disputes begin.

Shop drawings close the gaps. Once reviewed and approved, they become the agreed record of precisely what will be built — the reference everyone returns to when a question arises on site. Skipping them to save a few days at the drawing stage is the most reliable way to lose weeks at the installation stage.

What happens on site without proper shop drawings?

Without proper shop drawings, the usual result is misunderstanding, rework and delay. The root cause is simple: three parties — the client, the contractor and the installer — each picture the finished item slightly differently, and nothing on paper forces those pictures to agree.

So the item gets made to one interpretation, and on site it doesn't quite fit, doesn't match what the client expected, or clashes with services that were never coordinated. The fix is a variation, a workshop remake, or an on-site modification — every one of which costs time and money and strains the relationship between the parties. A clear shop drawing set removes the ambiguity before anyone cuts a board, which is why it pays for itself many times over.
